What You Need To Know About Digital Assets

Pittman Law Office is a professional firm with experienced Florida estate planning lawyers and probate lawyers on staff to help clients navigate through the often confusing processes involved with wills, trusts, probate, and estates.  Our next series of articles will dive into a fairly new area that definitely needs to be discussed with your Florida estate planning attorney: digital assets.

Let’s first start by defining what may be considered a digital asset. Digital assets may include domain names, e-mail, websites, blogs, social medial accounts, electronically stored photos and videos, cryptocurrencies, digital accounts, online revenue streams and non-fungible tokens, just to name a few.

Here are some steps your Florida estate planning attorney recommends you take regarding your digital assets:

Make A List

Make a comprehensive list of all of the digital assets you own. You can provide this list to your estate planning attorney, but it is also recommended that you keep a list somewhere where your loved ones can access it in the event of an emergency or your passing.

Securely Store Your Usernames And Passwords

Your loved ones will need your usernames and passwords should something happen to you, but it is not a good idea to store them with your digital asset list.  Consider subscribing to a password management app to safely store all of your usernames and passwords.

Our next article will cover more action items to consider to help protect your digital assets.
