Will and Estate Planning: Why Not to DIY

The COVID-19 crisis has caused many to pause and consider their wills and estate planning documents. Our Florida estate planning attorney discussed in a previous article the importance of these documents, especially during uncertain times.  Today, people of all ages are wishing to have their wills and estate documents either updated or prepared for the first time. While this is something that everyone should consider, some are choosing the do-it-yourself (DIY) route rather than hiring a qualified estate planning attorney.  While the internet offers many resources, we find that most DIY wills and estate planning documents have flaws and loopholes that can become problematic when the time comes for the estate to be settled.

First, let’s take a look at some ways one can bypass the advice of an estate planning attorney and create their own documents:

• Handwrite the documents themselves
• Download a “fill in the blank” form from the internet
• Generate the documents using an online question and answer form
