When we talk about estate planning, one of the most crucial components to understand is…
The estate planning attorneys and probate lawyers at Pittman Law Office find that some clients are unaware of the different types of property tax discounts they may qualify for in the state of Florida. We are continuing or series of articles highlighting some of the reductions available. Our previous articles covered the standard property tax exemption which is available to all Florida residents who own a primary home in the state worth more than $75,000, the exemption for widowers and widows, the different types of disability reductions, and assessment reductions for children and grandchildren. Today, we will look at two more types of Florida property tax exemptions.
US Veterans
Veterans of the United States armed forces who were honorably discharged and their spouses who own a homestead in Florida may qualify for the following:
- A veteran who has a 10% or greater disability during a wartime period may be eligible for up to $5000 reduction.
- A disabled veteran 65+ may be eligible to reduce their property tax by the same percentage as their disability rating.
- A veteran or surviving spouse with a total service-related disability may be eligible to receive a total tax exemption.
- The surviving spouse of an veteran who perished while on active duty may be eligible for a total tax exemption.
Spouse of First Responder
Any first responder (police officer, firefighter, correctional officer, paramedic, etc.) employed by a local, state, or federal government in the state of Florida who becomes permanently disabled or perishes in the line of duty may be eligible for a total tax exemption. Their surviving spouse may be eligible as well.
