As we enter the season of gratitude, it's the perfect time to reflect on the…
May is National Elder Law Month
In 1963, President Kennedy declared May to be Senior Citizens Month. In 1980, President Carter changed the name to Older Americans Month and since then May has morphed into National Elder Law Month. Regardless of what we call it, we are thankful for our clients who fall into this category.
Here at Pittman Law Office, we focus on two phases of life: 1) before you pass, if you become incapacitated, and 2) after you pass, transferring assets to your beneficiaries. This month we are focusing on before you pass away, if you become incapacitated. There are 4 major documents that are needed during this phase of life: 1) Durable Power of Attorney, 2) HIPAA authorization, 3) Living Will, and 4) a Designation of Health Care Surrogate.
These documents will help your loved ones have the authority to help you financially and/or make medical decisions if you are unable to do so yourself. If you do not have the above referenced documents in place, it will cause a lot of wasted time, money, and heartache for your loved ones.
A lot of our clients are concerned with moving into a long term care facility and depleting their assets. A question that we often get is, “how do we protect our money from a nursing home?” We do not practice Medicaid Planning at Pittman Law Office, our focus is Estate Planning. There is a major difference between what we do on a daily basis and what Medicaid Planning attorneys do. Here is a short video with Attorney Amy Pittman and Medicaid Planning Attorney Shannon Mulkey Ocala that highlights a couple Medicaid Planning tools.
Team Member Spotlight We have added a new member to the Pittman Law Office Team, Ms. Morgan Isabella. She made the long move from Mesa, Arizona to Sumter County at the beginning of 2024. Morgan is one of our paralegals who help us ensure that our client’s documents are drafted and ready for execution in a timely manner. Morgan enjoys reading and playing with her dog, Ida in her free time. |
