Pittman Law Office Newsflash

May is National Elder Law Month

Since the 1960’s the month of May has been recognized in some form as Elder Law Month. In previous years it has been called “Senior Citizens Month” or “Older Americans Month.” No matter what you call it, here at Pittman Law Office, we are thankful for our clients that fall into this category.

As we honor our elders this month, we want to remind you to communicate with your loved ones regarding their desires, both financially and medically. Specifically medically, because it is often that health care decisions are the most difficult decisions someone has to make. In a thorough Estate Plan, you will receive documents such as: a Designation of Health Care Surrogate, a Living Will, and an Authorization to Release Protected Health Information.

These documents are the tools that your administrators will use to prove to the doctors that they have the authority to make health care decisions for you. It is crucial that you choose someone that you not only trust, but who can handle making those tough end of life decisions. This may not need to be a family member; sometimes it is more beneficial to name someone who isn’t family, which can take some of the emotion out of end of life decision making, so that they are working with only your best interests in mind.

Throughout the month of May, we will be posting videos to our YouTube Channel and our Facebook page specifically discussing the documents mentioned above. Stay tuned for upcoming videos.
