The Villages

Pittman Law Office is more than just estate planning attorneys / probate attorneys working for our clients.  We are also members of The Villages community and we are dedicated to advocating for our seniors. Unfortunately, many elderly people are considered “easy targets” for abusers. It is important to be aware of the different types of abuse that can occur with elderly family, friends, and neighbors.

June 15th is Elder Abuse Awareness Day.  Here are some ways in which you can help decrease the instances of abuse among elderly family members and within your community:

  • Pay attention! If you suspect abuse or something seems suspicious, report it to Adult Protective Services.  You can make an anonymous report.
  • Check-in on older adults, especially those who do not have a lot of active family or friends close to them.

You can also educate yourself on how to recognize abuse. Start by reviewing the types of abuse that can occur among the elderly:

Physical Abuse

Any intentional act that causes pain, illness, or injury including pushing, slapping, burning, hitting, kicking, throwing objects at the person, shoving, etc.

Emotional or Psychological Abuse

Any behavior that causes a person to feel fear, anguish, or distress.  This can include yelling, threats, harassment, isolation, humiliation, and disrespect.

Sexual Abuse

Any unwanted or unwelcome sexual interaction, including sexual harassment.

Financial Abuse

Using or taking money, benefits, belongings, property, assets, etc. without permission or coercing someone into giving permission to another person who has ulterior motives that are not in the best interest of the older adult.

Neglect

When a caregiver or family member deprives an older adult of basic needs such as shelter, clothing, food, water, medical care, and hygiene.
